Crystal Cove Shake Shack Menu: Date Shakes & Ocean Views

Crystal Cove Shake Shack Menu: Date Shakes & Ocean Views

Orange County is packed with great beaches, restaurants, and cafés.

This charming retro roadside stand serves burgers, shakes, and other casual eats with a view of the beach.

It sits right along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), so it’s an easy, popular stop to work into a coastal drive.

Keep it in mind for your next day out along the coast.

A burger and a shake with the ocean in front of you are hard to beat.

What Is Crystal Cove Shake Shack?

History and Character

Crystal Cove Shake Shack is a longtime roadside burger stand along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Newport Coast.

It started out as a simple roadside refreshment stand and has gone by a few names over the decades, including the Date Shack. The date shake is still one of its signatures today.

Its yellow exterior and ocean views have made it a familiar local landmark.

Despite the name, it is not affiliated with the Shake Shack burger chain.

Crystal Cove Shake Shack Menu Highlights

The menu is short and classic: burgers, breakfast, and plenty of shakes.

Shakes

  • Date shake: the longtime signature, with a loyal following
  • Banana-chocolate shake: another favorite worth trying

Burgers & Lunch

  • Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and a special sauce
  • Fish and chips

Breakfast

  • Breakfast burrito with eggs, cheese, and bacon, a popular pick with regulars (some even bring their dogs)
  • French toast made with cinnamon rolls

Menu items and prices can change, so check the current menu before you go.

The View and the Vibe

The biggest draw, hands down, is the sweeping view of the Pacific right in front of you.

The stand sits on a bluff in Crystal Cove State Park, and from the outdoor seating you can take in the blue-green coastline, the historic beach cottages, and, on clear days, Catalina Island in the distance.

The ocean view is a big part of the appeal.

It can get busy around sunset, while mornings tend to be quieter.

With good food and a great view in one stop, it has long been a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

Hours and Getting There

The stand serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Check the current opening hours before you go.

It’s in Newport Coast (7703 East Coast Hwy, Newport Coast, CA), and it makes an easy stop on a scenic drive along PCH.

The small lot right at the stand fills up quickly, especially on weekends and around sunset.

If it’s full, Crystal Cove State Park’s paid day-use parking is an alternative (as of October 2026, the park lists a regular vehicle day-use fee of $15, with higher rates on some weekends and holidays). Give yourself extra time.

Good to Know

Stairs connect the stand with the historic cottage area below, so you can add a stroll along the Crystal Cove State Park shoreline after your meal.

Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove beach with tide pools and cottages

Crystal Cove State Park, where the Shake Shack sits, is well worth a visit in its own right.

The park covers about 3.2 miles (5 km) of coastline plus 2,400 acres of wild backcountry inland.

It also includes a historic district of charming vintage beach cottages.

The sandy beaches are popular for swimming and surfing, and the rocky coves are great for exploring tide pools. Surf conditions can change quickly, so check the conditions and heed posted warnings before heading into the water, and leave tide pool creatures where you find them.

Inland, miles of trails through the hills are open for hiking and mountain biking, with plenty of California plant life and wildlife to spot.

The historic cottages dot the shoreline, and some have been restored as vacation rentals for overnight stays.

One of the cottages even appeared in the movie Beaches, which adds to the nostalgic feel.

More to Explore After Crystal Cove Shake Shack

Newport Beach harbor with sailboats at sunset

After Crystal Cove, you can explore more of Newport Beach, including the harbor and Balboa Peninsula. Allow extra time for traffic and parking between stops.

Newport Beach is a coastal city known for its beaches and harbor, with roughly 6 miles (10 km) of sandy ocean beach and upscale neighborhoods.

It’s also the setting of the TV drama The O.C. and the Netflix series Selling the OC.

Newport Beach and the Piers

Newport Beach has two piers: Newport Pier to the north and Balboa Pier near the tip of the peninsula.

The area around the piers has a nostalgic beach-town feel, with locals fishing and classic shops lining the streets.

It’s perfect if you want a slow, laid-back day.

For swimming, choose an area with a lifeguard on duty, check the surf conditions, and keep a close eye on children.

Away from the busiest summer weekends, it’s easy to find a patch of sand or a bench and relax at your own pace.

In the evening, the sunset is gorgeous, and plenty of people come to photograph the pier against the evening sky (in winter, you can see the sun set right into the ocean).

One nice way to end the day: pick up a gelato from a nearby shop and enjoy the sunset from a bench.

Balboa Peninsula and the Fun Zone

On Balboa Peninsula, you’ll find the Balboa Fun Zone, a small waterfront amusement area.

With a colorful Ferris wheel and arcade games, it’s popular with families. Attractions and hours can change, so check before you go.

Seafood restaurants and souvenir shops line the area.

It’s also a hub for whale- and dolphin-watching cruises and other water activities, which can draw lines on weekends.

Near the Fun Zone, the Balboa Island Ferry carries pedestrians and cars between the peninsula and Balboa Island on a ride that takes just a few minutes.

It’s part of everyday life for locals. Check current fares and service information before you ride.

The ride is short, but it’s an underrated way to soak up the harbor views and sea breeze as sailboats glide by. The ferries run frequently, too.

If you drove to the peninsula, one fun plan is to take the ferry over to the island with your car and then leave the island by its bridge to the mainland.

Lighthouse (Newport Beach)

With its lighthouse-inspired exterior and harbor views, Lighthouse makes a scenic stop for a meal.

On our visit, we loved relaxing over our meal while watching the boats on the harbor.

We especially enjoyed the eggs Benedict with salmon. Check the current menu before you go.

It can get busy on some days, and it may be hard to get seated right away without a reservation, so try to avoid peak times or book ahead.

Planning Your Visit to Crystal Cove and Newport Beach

Newport Beach is mild year-round, and summer is a popular season for beach visits. Plan swimming and other water activities around the ocean conditions on the day.

That said, summer brings heavy traffic and tough parking, so for a more relaxed visit, try a weekday in spring (April–May) or fall (September–October).

On clear days, the sunsets and distant island silhouettes are especially beautiful. In December, the Christmas Boat Parade lights up the harbor with a procession of illuminated boats.

A quick note: Some details were last checked in October 2026. Hours, menus, fares, and other details may change, so please check official information before you visit.
