Los Angeles Travel Guide: Santa Monica Beach—A Must-Visit Destination

Los Angeles Travel Guide Santa Monica Beach—A Must-Visit Destination

A Must-Visit: Santa Monica Beach

When you think of beaches in the United States—especially in California—what’s the first place that comes to mind?

Even just around L.A. you’ve got a lineup of famous, well-loved spots: Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu, and many more.

1. History of Santa Monica

The history of Santa Monica stretches back to the 18th century.

In 1769, the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá and his party visited the area, naming it after the religious calendar’s “St. Monica’s Day.”

Ever since, this seaside paradise of stunning sunsets has drawn visitors from around the globe, becoming one of the world’s most popular beach destinations.

2. About Santa Monica Pier

Built in 1909, Santa Monica Pier is one of the most iconic spots for soaking up L.A.’s breezy, vibrant vibe.

Illustrators and street performers line the boardwalk, keeping visitors entertained.

Take in 3.5 miles of wide sandy beach and crystal-blue water!

3. About the Amusement Park

The park features a small roller coaster and an arcade, making it fun for everyone from little kids to adults!

The Ferris wheel with its sweeping Pacific Ocean views is a beloved icon of Santa Monica!

High winds can shut the Ferris wheel down, so if riding it on a clear day is a must, consider leaving yourself a few backup days.

4. Route 66 Sign

Route 66 was a former U.S. highway stretching 3,755 km (2,347 miles) between Chicago, Illinois, and Santa Monica, California.

The Route 66 marker on the pier is so popular that people often line up for photos!

Fun fact: the true western terminus of Route 66 is not on the pier but about 1.2 miles northeast, where Olympic Blvd meets Lincoln Blvd.

There’s no big pier-style sign there—just a small plaque reading “Historic Route 66 Begin.”

5. While You’re Here, Check Out a Popular Local Café

Trendy Santa Monica is packed with stylish cafés and shops.

One standout is the Urth Caffé Santa Monica location!

The chain is also in Japan and is famous for its organic coffee.

Be sure to try the avocado pizza and other food items—the menu is quite different from what you’ll find at the Japanese branches!

6. Practical Tips for Visiting

Weekdays are best

If your schedule is flexible, aim for a weekday instead of a weekend.

On Saturdays and Sundays the crowds can be so thick that you’ll struggle to get anywhere near the Ferris wheel!

The lot right next to the pier is usually much less full on weekdays, too.

Restrooms

As with many famous beaches, restroom cleanliness can leave a lot to be desired.

Best to take care of business beforehand!

Sketchy street vendors

Friendly chatter can sometimes mask a scammy sales pitch—stay alert.

There are plenty of legit shops along the street, so no need to be paranoid, but keep this in mind while wandering Santa Monica’s high-profile spots.

If you hate crowds…

Santa Monica gets packed. If you’d rather stroll in peace, you might find greater satisfaction at one of L.A.’s other beaches.

We’ve highlighted several quieter options on Instagram—check them out!

7. In Closing

Santa Monica is arguably the most famous, beloved beach in the world—virtually everyone has heard of it!

Make sure to visit at least once and soak up the best of L.A.!
