This bakery currently has six locations, with spacious and stylish interiors, and a new location is planned to open in the Downtown Disney area – it’s an incredibly popular spot!

Let’s explore the secrets behind why it’s so popular in Los Angeles and make your trip even better with some delicious bread!

Porto's Bakery Introduction

1. What is Porto’s Bakery?

Porto’s Bakery is one of Southern California’s most beloved bakery and cafe destinations.

It’s a spot loved by locals and tourists alike for its delicious bread, salads, coffee, and more.

The store is especially crowded during breakfast hours, and you’ll see customers around the shop carrying yellow logo boxes and large bags filled with baked goods.

2. How Rosa Porto and Her Family Immigrated to America and Built a Popular Bakery

As the name suggests, Porto’s Bakery was founded by Rosa Porto.

The fact that she was born and raised in Cuba (her family has roots in the Galicia region of Spain) has influenced her recipes for sweet, delicious breads and cakes!

When Rosa and her husband Raul Sr. applied to leave Cuba, Rosa lost her job. During that time, she supported the family by selling cakes and other baked goods from her home in Cuba.

Even back then, her baked sweets were highly acclaimed.

Later, they immigrated to California with only the bare necessities—Raul Sr.’s hard work ethic, Rosa’s baking skills, and a dream of “a better life.”

Rosa’s home-baked cakes, which had been popular in Cuba, were equally well-received in California, and many people began coming to Rosa’s home to buy her cakes.

In 1976, they finally opened their first “Porto’s Bakery” location on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, California.

Initially, her husband Raul Sr. worked at another bakery while helping Rosa’s shop, but within a few years he was able to focus entirely on the business, and together they expanded it.

Their three children also helped at the shop after school and on weekends. Witnessing their parents’ passion for baking, they later (after graduating from college) took on important roles in the Porto’s Bakery business.

Rosa’s Cuban-style cakes, breads, and new products continued to grow in popularity, and the bakery now has six locations in the Los Angeles area.

After Rosa passed away in 2019, her children and grandchildren have carried on her legacy, working alongside many staff members to continue running the bakery with the same dedication!

Porto's Bakery Locations

3. Where Are the Locations?

Porto’s Bakery has six locations throughout Southern California.

In 1982, they opened the Glendale location, and the original Echo Park store was closed.

After that, the Burbank location opened in 2006, followed by the Downey location in 2009.

The Buena Park location in Orange County opened in 2017, and the West Covina location opened in 2019.

Most recently, the Northridge location opened in 2022, and a new location is currently planned for the Downtown Disney area!

All locations feature spacious, relaxed interiors with attached cafe spaces, making them perfect for breakfast or brunch.

4. Appeal #1: Simply Delicious!

The biggest appeal of Porto’s Bakery is, without a doubt, how delicious everything is.

In fact, it’s so popular that it ranked #1 on “Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US.”

Yelp is one of the most well-known restaurant and cafe review sites in America.

Since bread in Japan tends to be subtly sweet, the level of sweetness in foreign bread is often a concern for Japanese visitors.

At this bakery, while it varies by item, many of their baked goods are sweet but not overly so—another reason we recommend it.

Everything I’ve tried there has been delicious, but for our top recommendations, check out our Instagram post below!

5. Appeal #2: Spacious Stores

All Porto’s Bakery locations are spacious, featuring relaxed and stylish cafe spaces.

After purchasing your bread, you can enjoy breakfast with your baked goods and coffee in the cafe space, or order a salad and enjoy brunch.

When I first walked into the Downey location, I was amazed by how huge both the bakery area and the cafe space were.

The massive interior was filled with customers, and there were plenty of staff members working.

One thing that surprised me was how smooth the checkout process was—each customer had a dedicated staff member to take their order.

6. Appeal #3: Budget-Friendly

Porto’s Bakery offers incredible value for the taste and quality you get.

For example, as featured in the Instagram post above, the PINEAPPLE EMPANADA is just $1.90 each, and the CHOCOLATE CROISSANT is $2.75 each. (Prices at the time of our visit)

Many baked goods are available in the $2-3 range, and their cakes and sandwiches are also reasonably priced.

It’s definitely the perfect bakery for locals looking for a great breakfast every morning.

In America, regardless of industry, when something is significantly cheaper than competitors, the quality is often noticeably poor—so finding a bakery that’s both affordable AND delicious like this one is quite rare!

7. Final Thoughts

Porto’s Bakery is a beloved Southern California bakery with a rich history and the warmth of a family-run business.

We discovered that the secrets to its popularity are the sweets carrying on Cuban traditions, the spacious stores, and the affordable prices—all of which attract customers and keep them coming back.

If you have the chance to visit Southern California, be sure to stop by and experience its charm for yourself!
