Desert Hills Premium Outlets: How to Get There & Practical Tips from LA

Desert Hills Premium Outlets – An Outlet in the Desert
Tips for Enjoying Your Shopping and Journey

When traveling to the West Coast of America, wouldn’t you like to enjoy some shopping too?

Today, I’ll introduce Desert Hills Premium Outlets, an outlet in the desert that’s about 2 hours by car from LAX!

You can potentially purchase American brands at discounted prices, so please check this blog for tips on how to efficiently enjoy shopping!

1. What is Desert Hills Premium Outlets?

Desert Hills Premium Outlets is located about 20 miles (approximately 20-25 minutes by car) from the California resort area of Palm Springs, and about 110 miles (approximately 2 hours by car) from LAX airport.

While it’s quite a distance from Los Angeles, it’s conveniently located along the freeway, making it very accessible by car.

This is a large-scale outlet featuring a diverse range of products including fashion and accessories from luxury to casual brands,

as well as sporting goods, household items, and children’s products!

2. Popular Brands and Stores

Desert Hills Outlets currently has about 180 stores and is famous for its extensive brand selection.

Designer brand items that are usually offered at high prices can be purchased at outlet prices.

For example, there are stores of famous brands everyone knows like Gucci, Prada, Coach, and Burberry!

I recommend bags from Kate Spade and Tumi, and shoes from Nike, which can be purchased at relatively reasonable prices.

Even outside of holiday sale periods, you may be able to purchase items at 20-50% off or even greater discounts, so definitely check them out when you visit!

3. Tips for Efficient Shopping

There are several things to be aware of for efficient shopping at Desert Hills Outlets.

Especially during holiday season, the crowds are incomparably worse than other days, so you need to be careful!

Visit on Weekdays, Avoiding Black Friday

This is the most important point – if you want to enjoy relaxed, normal shopping, you should definitely avoid Black Friday and similar events!

According to people who have visited on Black Friday, the large parking lots become completely full, restrooms become insufficient, and it gets so crowded that even food and drinks run out.

You’ll spend time searching for parking, and even just paying for items involves waiting like at a theme park.

On regular weekdays, you can park close to the stores and enjoy comfortable shopping, so that’s recommended!

Stay Hydrated, Dress Light, and Bring a Jacket Just in Case

Cabazon, where Desert Hills Outlets is located, has a desert climate, so it gets extremely hot in summer.

Especially from July to early September, temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F).

Unlike Japan’s hot and humid summers, the humidity is low, so it’s relatively cool in the shade of trees or buildings, but don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and hydration.

If you’re used to Japan’s high humidity, you might become dehydrated without realizing it, so it’s recommended to consciously drink water frequently.

Also, since the grounds are extensive, it’s recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes for walking around,

but bring a jacket just in case as it can get cold in the mornings and evenings, and the air conditioning in stores can be strong!

Be Aware of Freeway Traffic on the Return Trip

While the area around the outlets doesn’t get too congested, as you approach downtown Los Angeles, the freeways become very crowded during morning and evening rush hours.

Especially when returning from the outlets to Los Angeles, if you coincide with evening rush hour, you might get stuck in traffic, so be careful!

Depending on the day, accidents can cause severe congestion even outside of rush hour.

To enjoy shopping without worrying about time, it’s also recommended to stay near the outlets and shop at a leisurely pace!

Prepare Food If Possible

While there’s a Starbucks cafe and food courts in the outlets, the food options aren’t particularly extensive.

While you can eat at nearby restaurants outside the outlets as mentioned later, it’s also a good idea to pick up food in the Los Angeles area and bring it with you!

What I actually tried was stopping by Porto’s Bakery and Cafe, a bakery in the Los Angeles area, on the way to the outlets.

It worked well to buy bread, coffee, juice, salad, etc. here in the morning, have breakfast in the store, and bring extra bread to the outlets for lunch.

This bakery is very reasonably priced and delicious, so even buying extra bread is wallet-friendly.

Porto’s Bakery and Cafe has 6 locations around Los Angeles, so definitely visit a convenient store along your route!

4. Get a Burger at the Nearby IN-N-OUT on Your Way Back

There’s an IN-N-OUT location near the outlets!

IN-N-OUT is California’s hugely popular burger chain, well-known in Japan as Shohei Ohtani’s favorite!

The store is located about 6 minutes by car (approximately 1.2 miles) from the outlets, making it perfect to stop by on your way to or from the outlets.

You can reach the world-famous tourist destination Palm Springs in about 20-25 minutes by car.

There are recommended spots where you can enjoy wonderful nature, such as the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, so definitely visit!
