Rumors of Demolition? The Other-Worldly Beauty of the Glass Church—Wayfarers Chapel

The famed “Glass Church,” officially known as Wayfarers Chapel, once stood in the upscale community of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Beloved by Hollywood celebrities for weddings and frequently used as a filming location for dramas and movies, it was one of California’s most sought-after chapels.

It even made headlines in Japan when well-known figures chose it for their ceremonies or music videos.

Although the chapel has sadly been dismantled, many are hopeful it will one day reopen. Below, we take a closer look at Wayfarers Chapel—its current status, its history, and the unique appeal that made it so iconic.

1. What Is Wayfarers Chapel?

This chapel, which opened in 1951, once stood in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

Designed by Lloyd Wright—the son of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the “three great masters of modern architecture” and the architect behind Japan’s former Imperial Hotel—the chapel is a masterpiece of organic design.

Featuring extensive glasswork and other natural materials, the structure blends seamlessly with its coastal surroundings, creating an arrestingly beautiful harmony between architecture and nature.

2. History

Wayfarers Chapel traces its origins to the late 1920s, when members of the Swedenborgian Church living in what is now Palos Verdes first dreamed of building it.

More specifically, they envisioned a small, beautiful sanctuary set on a bluff overlooking the Pacific—somewhere travelers (wayfarers) could stop to rest, meditate, and give thanks to God.

Although church members donated land and began planning, the Great Depression and then World War II delayed construction for many years.

At last, in 1951 the chapel was completed—and it has been beloved ever since.

Today, Wayfarers Chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in December 2023 it was further designated a National Historic Landmark.

3. Closure, Demolition & Future Reconstruction

At present the chapel is closed because heavy rains and ongoing landslides have made the site unsafe.

In fact, the chapel grounds and the surrounding area have experienced varying degrees of land movement for more than 50 years.

During March–April 2024 the bluff reportedly shifted about 7 inches (≈ 17.8 cm) per week.

Engineers have now concluded that the only way to preserve and restore the structure without further damage is to dismantle it immediately.

The plan is to re-assemble Wayfarers Chapel at a safer location—so one day we can again experience its glass-and-green splendor.

4. Inside the Glass Chapel

If you visit during hours when there is no service or wedding, you can walk right into the sanctuary.

It is hard to believe that this building is more than 70 years old—the design still feels strikingly modern and elegant.

Through the all-glass roof and walls you look straight up at the towering sequoias and other graceful trees that wrap around the chapel.

Soft sunlight filters through the branches, creating a wonderfully serene and airy atmosphere.

5. A Beloved Chapel That Has Hosted Countless Weddings

Not only have Hollywood celebrities celebrated their vows here, but many well-known Japanese public figures have also chosen Wayfarers Chapel for their wedding ceremonies.

With its rich history and breathtaking beauty, this glass chapel is the stuff of dreams—an unforgettable venue for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

We can’t imagine a more perfect backdrop for a truly special wedding day!

6. About the Gardens

While the all-glass sanctuary is stunning, the surrounding gardens are equally enchanting.

Depending on the season, visitors are greeted by vibrant blooms that frame the ocean views.

One path is paved with bricks and stones that can be engraved for a fee, allowing couples and visitors to leave personal messages.

Strolling past these inscribed bricks, you quickly realize how deeply this chapel has touched people’s hearts!
