Griffith Observatory Guide: History, Films & Best Views

From Movie Sets to the Stars: Exploring Griffith Observatory
The world-famous Griffith Observatory attracts visitors from across the globe!
This article dives into what you can enjoy at Griffith Observatory—its allure, history, and must-know tips for your visit.
1. What Is Griffith Observatory?
Located inside Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, this observatory houses space-and-science exhibits along with public telescopes.
Step outside and you’ll be treated to sweeping views of downtown L.A. and the Hollywood Hills.
Since opening in 1935, it has grown into one of the city’s most popular attractions for visitors from around the world.
2. History
The story of Griffith Observatory stretches back to the late 19th century.
Griffith J. Griffith, a mining engineer and entrepreneur from Wales, donated about 3,015 acres of land to the City of Los Angeles in 1896 with the aim of creating a public park—today’s Griffith Park.
In 1912 he offered the L.A. City Council funds to build a public observatory where anyone could learn about astronomy and view the stars.
Although the observatory was not built during his lifetime, after his death in 1919 his will set aside money for the project, and by 1935 Griffith Observatory was completed and opened to the public.
3. Renovation and Today
Public access was paused in 2002 for renovation work after 67 years of continuous operation; the $93 million overhaul was completed four years later, in 2006.
With the reopening, new exhibit halls and a café were added, making the observatory even more beloved by tourists and locals alike.

4. Appeal as a Film Location
Griffith Observatory is renowned as the backdrop for many iconic films.
For example, James Dean’s “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955),
“The Terminator” (1984),
“Transformers” (2007),
and “La La Land” (2016) all feature scenes shot here.
Thanks to these productions, the observatory has become even more famous worldwide.
Be sure to soak in the movie magic while you’re there!
5. Samuel Oschin Planetarium
This cutting-edge planetarium is housed right inside the observatory.
On days the building is open, three different shows run in rotation.
Admission to the observatory itself is free, but you’ll need a paid ticket to see these shows.

6. Stunning Views
From the outdoor terraces you get a sweeping view of Los Angeles.
You can even snap a photo with the famous Hollywood Sign in the frame.
On a clear day, the downtown skyline looks razor-sharp—truly breathtaking.

When it comes to parking, you’ll either have to snag a spot in the small lot near the observatory or use the paid street parking inside Griffith Park.
If you opt for street parking, keep in mind it’s a short uphill walk to the observatory.
Weekends get especially crowded, so visiting on a weekday—and giving yourself extra time—is your best bet!
8. Café & Gift Shop
Griffith Observatory has the Café at the End of the Universe—a snack bar with outdoor terrace seating—and the Stellar Emporium, a shop where you can pick up souvenirs.
The terrace is a perfect place to relax, so make sure to take a break there!
9. In Closing
Along with its planetarium shows and exhibits, Griffith Observatory is a beloved filming location where you can immerse yourself in movie magic!
