Disneyland Frontierland Guide (Anaheim): Best Attractions, Restaurants & Tips
Embark on an Adventure at Frontierland in California Disneyland Park!
At Disneyland Park in California, there’s an area called “Frontierland” where you can experience an atmosphere as if you’ve time-traveled back to the 19th century American frontier era.
Frontierland spreads out a world set in the “American West,” featuring red rock formations reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains and islands to explore—offering a sense of adventure that’s a bit different from the typical Disney image.
It’s an area that often gets overlooked as visitors tend to focus on flashy areas like Star Wars, or they may only know Big Thunder Mountain due to time constraints.
However, it’s actually an area filled with hidden charm and the heartfelt vision of founder Walt Disney.
This time, we’ll thoroughly introduce the highlights of Frontierland!

1. What Is Frontierland?
Disneyland’s “Frontierland” is an area themed around 19th century America’s frontier era.
It was one of the original areas when Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955!
The wooden buildings and wilderness landscapes—where you can almost hear coyotes howling—are faithfully recreated, allowing you to experience an atmosphere as if you’ve time-traveled to the frontier era.
Disney founder Walt Disney wanted to convey America’s spirit of adventure and pioneering spirit to guests through the 19th century frontier era!
Furthermore, he wanted to provide not just attractions but also opportunities to learn about American history, so educational elements are incorporated throughout.
It’s a charming area where you can feel history while experiencing the playful spirit of adventure that’s so quintessentially Disney.
2. How Is It Different from Tokyo Disneyland’s “Westernland”?
Tokyo Disneyland’s Westernland and California’s Frontierland share similarities since both are areas based on “America’s Western frontier era”!
Both have Big Thunder Mountain, Tom Sawyer Island, boats, and rafts!
There are several differences in the details—in California, Tom Sawyer Island has a pirate theme, and in addition to the Mark Twain Riverboat, there’s also the Columbia, and since the river shape is different, the sailing routes are different too!
3. Signature Attractions and More
1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
When you come to Frontierland, Big Thunder Mountain is an absolute must.
Set against the backdrop of an American West gold mine, a runaway mine train races along the rails of an abandoned mine.
The speed is quite thrilling, and riding at night is fantastic—the illuminated rocks and the train racing through darkness create a magical atmosphere that’s quite different from the daytime experience!
While the course itself isn’t too long, it has the storytelling and production quality you’d expect from Disney, letting you fully enjoy the “mine train adventure.”
Even if you’re not a fan of intense thrill rides, it’s not as wild as Space Mountain, so I think it’s a relatively approachable roller coaster!

2. Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia
The Mark Twain Riverboat is a steamboat-style ride that gracefully sails along the large river—a symbol of Frontierland.
Characterized by its pure white hull and large paddle wheel, once aboard you can enjoy views of Frontierland and adjacent New Orleans Square from its two- and three-story decks.
The Mark Twain Riverboat is said to be a faithful recreation of the historic steamboats that transported people along the Mississippi River!

On certain days, you can also ride the Columbia!
The fully-rigged sailing ship “Columbia,” measuring 110 feet in length, is said to be a replica of the actual “Columbia”—the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe!
While the real Columbia took three years to sail around the world, the voyage at Disneyland can be enjoyed in about 15 minutes.
The Columbia isn’t available at Tokyo Disneyland, so if you see it, definitely hop aboard!

3. Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Tom Sawyer Island has the unique distinction of being the only attraction designed by Walt Disney himself.
Walt was fond of the novels by Mark Twain, author of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” and wanted to reflect the world Twain envisioned in his stories on the island.
A few days before construction began, he took the blueprints home and redesigned them, creating features like the coves that exist on the island today.
When you actually visit Tom Sawyer Island, it’s like an uninhabited island in the middle of the river, and you get there by raft.
The island is dotted with caves, suspension bridges, and hideaway spots that excite not just children but adults too with a sense of exploration.
In 2007, it was renovated and became “Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island.”
This renovation added elements from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” to Tom Sawyer Island!
4. Restaurants and Cafés
1. The Golden Horseshoe
This is a restaurant and show venue in Frontierland styled like an old-fashioned saloon.
You can enjoy dishes like sandwiches and chicken nuggets while watching Western-style stage shows.
The interior features classic wooden décor that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a 19th century restaurant.
If your timing is right, you can catch comedic shows, so be sure to check the schedule.
The content is enjoyable for both children and adults, and you’re sure to have a heartwarming, laughter-filled meal.

2. River Belle Terrace
River Belle Terrace is a restaurant located near New Orleans Square, close to Frontierland.
They serve classic American dishes like scrambled eggs, French toast, and applewood smoked bacon!
You can also enjoy hearty meals like pulled pork sandwiches, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes.
There’s terrace seating too, and one of its charms is being able to relax and dine while watching the riverboats pass by.

3. Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante
This restaurant, whose name means “Ranch of the Town Square” in Spanish, is a counter-service restaurant featuring Mexican cuisine.
You can enjoy delicious Esquite Bowl, Carne Asada Fries, as well as chicken tacos and bean and cheese burritos!
The menu features dishes that blend California and Mexican cultures, with colorful salsas and spicy sauces that are appealing both visually and to the appetite.

4. Stage Door Café
This is a café where you can casually enjoy hearty dishes like chicken tenders, Caesar wraps, and hand-dipped corn dogs!
It’s perfect when you want to grab a quick meal or satisfy your hunger between attractions!

5. Recommended Ways to Enjoy for Those with Children or Those Who Want to Stroll Leisurely
Walking around from morning to night, you can really build up quite a lot of fatigue.
Among the park areas, Frontierland is recommended as a spot where you can relax while enjoying a bit of nature!
Especially recommended is taking a raft to Tom Sawyer Island to explore, or buying a snack and sitting on a bench on the island to eat.
By the way, there are restrooms on Tom Sawyer Island, so you don’t have to worry even if you play for a long time!
Some children may get tired of riding attractions or walking around, but exploring the caves on Tom Sawyer Island might just captivate them completely.
