San Fransokyo Square | Big Hero 6 at Disney California Adventure

Just Like Japan!? Disney’s California-Exclusive San Fransokyo Square

When visiting California, one of the must-see places is Disney California Adventure Park, right?

This time, we’ll introduce the details of San Fransokyo Square—a California-exclusive area!

It’s a very unique area filled with Japanese cultural touches, so be sure to check it out!

1. What Is Disney California Adventure Park?

In Anaheim, California, there are two Disney Parks.

One is “Disneyland Park,” famous as the world’s first Disney park.

The other is “Disney California Adventure Park”—home to the area we’re introducing today.

This park features many attractions and areas based on relatively newer works like Disney films, Pixar films, and Marvel films.

“San Fransokyo Square” is one of them, attracting significant attention as a new spot themed around the world of the movie “Big Hero 6.”

2. What Is the Movie “Big Hero 6”?

Overview of “Big Hero 6”

“Big Hero 6” is a feature-length animated film released by Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2014.

The original source is Marvel Comics’ “Big Hero 6,” and it became a talking point as a unique Disney work depicting a “hero team.”

The highlights of the film include the bond between protagonist Hiro and the healthcare robot “Baymax” invented by his late brother Tadashi, as well as the teamwork with his friends.

Combining comedic scenes with thrilling action, it became a worldwide hit and is also known for winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Character Profiles

Baymax

A healthcare robot with a white, rounded body.

Originally created as a medical support robot by Hiro’s older brother Tadashi, Baymax gained hero abilities when Hiro equipped him with a battle suit.

His warm personality and gentle movements are his defining features, making him a beloved character among fans worldwide.

Hiro Hamada

A 14-year-old boy with a genius mind and engineering sense.

Influenced by his older brother, he becomes immersed in cutting-edge robotics and faces numerous challenges while deepening his bond with Baymax.

The Setting: San Fransokyo

The setting of “Big Hero 6” is “San Fransokyo”—a fictional city that fuses San Francisco and Tokyo.

In addition to hilly streets and cable cars, the cityscape features Japanese elements like lanterns and signs with Japanese text, creating an impressive blend of Asian and American cultures.

3. What Is San Fransokyo Square at Disney?

The Birth of a New Area

“San Fransokyo Square” is an area that debuted in August 2023 at Disney California Adventure Park.

Originally, this area was “Pacific Wharf,” an area themed around the California coast.

Since it’s currently a California Disney-exclusive area, we recommend visiting whether you’re a Baymax fan or not!

How Has It Changed?

The area has been completely transformed from the fishing port design of the former Pacific Wharf, now decorated with a mix of Japanese and Western styles to match the movie’s setting.

Signs with kanji characters and lanterns catch your eye with unique designs that make you want to snap photos.

A Baymax greeting spot has been set up, giving you the chance to hug his fluffy body and take photos.

The biggest appeal is being able to interact directly with your favorite character while soaking in the world’s atmosphere.

4. Why Do We Recommend It?

The pop streetscape blending Japanese and Western styles is exceptionally unique even among Disney parks!

It’s also fun to spot the countless Japanese words written on buildings and signs throughout the area—little details that add to the immersive feeling of actually being in San Fransokyo, a city where American and Japanese cultures collide.

Not only will “Big Hero 6” fans enjoy it, but even those who haven’t seen the movie will surely be charmed by San Fransokyo’s unique atmosphere!

Also, as a remnant of Pacific Wharf, you can still enjoy California food culture like bread and seafood, but new Asian-inspired menu items have been added, making the variety even richer—another reason we recommend it!

5. Other Recommended Areas

Besides San Fransokyo, Disney California Adventure Park has numerous other must-see areas.

Here we’ll introduce two areas that aren’t found at Tokyo Disney Resort: “Cars Land” and “Avengers Campus.”

Cars Land

“Cars Land” is an area that faithfully recreates the world of the Pixar film “Cars.”

From the buildings and signs lining Main Street to the desolate landscape of Route 66, you can experience what it’s like to jump right into the movie.

One of the most popular attractions in the park is “Radiator Springs Racers.”

Hop into a Cars character vehicle and race through a scenic course straight out of the movie—the thrill and exhilaration are a must-see.

Wait times tend to be long for this attraction, so using services like Lightning Lane is key.

Avengers Campus

“Avengers Campus” is an area where heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gather.

Since opening in 2021, it has been extremely popular as an area where you can take photos with popular characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man, or enjoy shows.

In the Spider-Man attraction “WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure,” you can enjoy an interactive experience where you actually use your hands to sling webs.

The experience using the latest motion sensor technology makes you feel like you’ve become Spider-Man yourself, exciting both adults and children alike.

6. Summary

Disney California Adventure Park is characterized by focusing mainly on relatively newer movies and characters among Disney parks.

Among these, the newly renovated “San Fransokyo Square” is attracting many guests’ attention as a place to experience the world of “Big Hero 6”!

Not only for Baymax fans, but even for those who haven’t seen the movie, it’s an exceptionally unique and fun area, so be sure to visit!
