Assessing Quality<\/h3>\n<p>After launching my company, one of the first hurdles I faced was figuring out <strong>how to judge quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the business of selling physical goods, purchasing inventory is unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The United States can spring surprises\u2014both good and bad\u2014that you&#8217;d never imagine encountering in Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the sections that follow, I&#8217;ll share lessons from my own experience that will help you not only when sourcing inventory but also whenever you&#8217;re buying anything in day-to-day American life.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">The Highly Tricky Job of Sourcing Used Cars<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecodriveondemand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u30a2\u30a4\u30ad\u30e3\u30c3\u30c1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the United States, sourcing inventory can be an extremely tricky task.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because <span class=\"q_underline2\">if you can&#8217;t properly judge quality, you can get taken advantage of in no time<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the products we deal in is used cars, and the vehicle we purchased can sometimes turn out to be completely different from what was advertised\u2014or in shockingly poor condition.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, you can usually place a fair amount of trust in the seller when sourcing goods, so this is a point that requires <strong>extra caution in the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">You Also Need a Keen Eye When Sourcing New Products<\/h3>\n<p>Besides selling used cars, we also handle a variety of services such as vehicle maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, when we order brand-new dash cams, it&#8217;s quite common to find units that arrive scratched or even broken straight out of the box.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"q_underline2\">And remember, this caution applies not only to used items\u2014brand-new products demand just as much vigilance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why do issues like this arise?<\/p>\n<p>There are several possible reasons.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">Why Brand-New Shipments Often Contain Defective Items<\/h3>\n<p>There are <strong>three likely reasons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First, lax quality control during manufacturing allows faulty units to be shipped out as-is.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the products are handled carelessly in transit and arrive damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Third, <span class=\"q_underline2\">items that customers bought elsewhere and then returned get mixed into the batches you receive<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>That last scenario may sound unbelievable to those of us from Japan, but <strong>in the U.S. it&#8217;s an everyday occurrence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">America&#8217;s Return Culture<\/h3>\n<p>For example, during the Super Bowl\u2014the biggest sporting event in the U.S.\u2014large-screen TVs sell in huge numbers.<\/p>\n<p>But once the Super Bowl ends, many of those TVs are promptly returned.<\/p>\n<p>These sets are, of course, far from unused.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re unboxed, enjoyed by the whole family for the big game, then re-packed and taken back to the store.<\/p>\n<p>Such practices are <strong>perfectly commonplace in the United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"q_underline2\">What&#8217;s more, retailers rarely bother to check for scratches or test functionality before putting these returns back on the shelf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because returns are so easy in the U.S., you need to <strong>scrutinize even supposedly &#8220;brand-new&#8221; inventory with great care<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">Used-Car Auctions: Where Assessing Quality Gets Even Tougher<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecodriveondemand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u30a2\u30a4\u30ad\u30e3\u30c3\u30c1\uff13\u2212\uff12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even though sourcing brand-new items already involves plenty of pitfalls, buying used cars\u2014our main product line\u2014requires even greater vigilance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While we sometimes purchase vehicles directly from private owners, most of our inventory comes from venues called auctions\u2014<strong>wholesale marketplaces much like a fish market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At used-car auctions, it&#8217;s common to see vehicles that are already faulty cleverly disguised and sold as if nothing were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>These cars do undergo pre-auction inspections, but the checks are so superficial that the reports are virtually useless.<\/p>\n<p>If one of these vehicles ultimately reaches an end customer, issues surface during use and we end up facing complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does this inconvenience the customer, it also damages our reputation\u2014<strong>nobody wins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"styled_h3\">The Single Most Crucial Step in Sourcing Used Cars: Post-Purchase Inspection<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"q_underline3\">To avoid worst-case scenarios like these, a thorough inspection right after purchase is absolutely essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Carefully examine every vehicle for hidden issues<\/strong>;
