What Is Silicon Valley?<\/h3>\n<p>Silicon Valley is the area centered on the Santa Clara Valley, at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay in California, and it holds one of the largest concentrations of the technology industry anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p><mark class=\"hl-yellow\">The name combines \u201csilicon,\u201d the main material used in semiconductors, with the Santa Clara Valley, which used to be farm country.<\/mark> It caught on during the semiconductor boom of the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>These days it goes well beyond chipmaking: software, cloud, AI, biotech, cleantech, and space, with startups and giants sharing one ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Geographically it sits about a 45-minute drive south of San Francisco. The rough boundaries run from around Redwood City in the north to San Jose in the south, Fremont to the east, and the Santa Cruz Mountains behind Stanford to the west.<\/p>\n<p>Around 3.1 million people live in the area, and it keeps getting more diverse as skilled workers move in.<\/p>\n<p>Mountain View, one of the main cities, is where Google is headquartered. With roughly 82,000 residents as of 2023 it\u2019s fairly compact by Silicon Valley standards, but <mark class=\"hl-yellow\">household income there runs well above the national average<\/mark>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #f5f7fa; border-left: 4px solid #4285f4; padding: 16px 20px; margin: 1.5em 0; border-radius: 4px;\">\n<p>For example, U.S. Census figures (American Community Survey) put the median household income in the city of Mountain View at <strong>$179,917<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The national median household income for that same year, 2023, was <strong>$80,610<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a gap of roughly $99,300 \u2014 about 2.2 times the national figure, or +123%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Along the bay you\u2019ll also find Google\u2019s Charleston Park and Shoreline Park, built on restored wetlands, which gives the area its particular look: tech campuses sitting right next to open nature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 700px; display: block; margin: 20px auto; border-radius: 8px;\" src=\"https:\/\/ecodriveautosales.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image_1787667367_8b003674.jpg\" alt=\"Silicon Valley tech campus and bayside greenery\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: bold; margin: 1.2em 0 0.6em 0; color: #555;\">(Bonus) How Silicon Valley Came to Be<\/h4>\n<p>Long before any of this, <mark class=\"hl-yellow\">the area was orchard country known as the <strong>\u201cValley of Heart\u2019s Delight,\u201d<\/strong> covered in prune and apricot trees<\/mark>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>mid-20th century<\/strong>, Stanford University set up an industrial park on its own land \u2014 what is now Stanford Research Park \u2014 to draw research-driven companies in close to the campus.<\/p>\n<p>One of its tenants, <strong>Hewlett-Packard (HP)<\/strong>, became the symbol of the garage startup, and the high-tech cluster here is usually traced back to that period.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1956<\/strong>, <strong>William Shockley<\/strong> set up a semiconductor company here, one of the first in the area to work in silicon.<\/p>\n<p>The group that spun out of it, the <strong>\u201cTraitorous Eight,\u201d<\/strong> went on to found Fairchild Semiconductor, which in turn led to <strong>Intel<\/strong> and the rest of the chip industry that grew up here.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>1970s<\/strong>, <strong>Apple<\/strong> came out of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak\u2019s home garage and opened the personal computer era.<\/p>\n<p>Through the <strong>1980s and 90s<\/strong>, venture capital grew quickly and the NASDAQ listing boom took off.<\/p>\n<p>Networking and software companies like <strong>Cisco, Sun Microsystems, and Oracle<\/strong> rose to the front.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>2000s<\/strong>, internet services led by <strong>Google, Facebook (now Meta), and Netflix<\/strong> grew fast.<\/p>\n<p>That period cemented the region\u2019s place as a center of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>2010s<\/strong> brought the full expansion of smartphones and cloud computing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple<\/strong> drove the iPhone ecosystem while <strong>Google<\/strong> expanded Android and its cloud platform.<\/p>\n<p>On the chip side, <strong>NVIDIA<\/strong> put GPUs to work on AI computation and laid the groundwork for the AI boom.<\/p>\n<p>In electric vehicles, <strong>Tesla<\/strong> \u2014 headquartered in Palo Alto at the time \u2014 drew attention for building cars software-first.<\/p>\n<p>Then the <strong>2020s<\/strong> brought the wave of generative AI. <strong>Google<\/strong> introduced large language models running on its own TPUs, and <strong>NVIDIA<\/strong>\u2019s AI GPUs drove semiconductor demand.<\/p>\n<p>In self-driving, Alphabet\u2019s <strong>Waymo<\/strong> expanded its robotaxi service into everyday operation, and the wider push into next-generation mobility accelerated with it.<\/p>\n<p>All of that history built up into what the area is known for: a tolerance for failure, flat organizations, fast decisions, and a social fabric that takes in people from everywhere.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Walking through a place where that history and today\u2019s innovation sit side by side is what makes a Silicon Valley visit more than a tour of \u201cthe town where the IT companies are.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 1.4em; font-weight: bold; margin: 1.3em 0 0.8em 0; color: #444;\">2. What Is Google LLC?<\/h3>\n<p><mark class=\"hl-yellow\">Google LLC is one of the world\u2019s largest technology companies<\/mark>, with a product range that spans online advertising, search, cloud, AI, and hardware.<\/p>\n<p>It operates under its parent company, Alphabet Inc., which reports the group\u2019s financial results.<\/p>\n<p>Its headquarters is the Googleplex in Mountain View, California \u2014 a sprawling campus that holds numerous R&amp;D facilities alongside the Google Visitor Experience, which is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s stated mission is \u201cto organize the world\u2019s information and make it universally accessible and useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It still holds around 90% of the search market \u2014 a commanding lead.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: bold; margin: 1.2em 0 0.6em 0; color: #555;\">2-1. Google Bikes (G-Bikes)<\/h3>\n<p>Google Bikes are the free shared bicycles employees use to get around the Googleplex and the surrounding campuses, easy to spot by their multicolored stripes.<\/p>\n<p>The frame is lightweight aluminum alloy, with 26-inch wheels, a three-speed internal hub, and a step-through shape that anyone can swing a leg over.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no brand logo on them. Instead the whole frame is painted in Google\u2019s four colors \u2014 blue, red, yellow, and green \u2014 which makes them a friendly visual landmark on campus.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a small pilot has grown into a fleet spread across the Mountain View and Sunnyvale campuses.<\/p>\n<p>None of them are locked. Computer History Museum<\/h4>\n<p>This is a seriously fun museum for anyone curious about how computing got to where it is!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s at 1401 N Shoreline Blvd in Mountain View, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Google Visitor Experience.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Mondays and Tuesdays.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a general admission fee, with discounted rates for students, seniors, and younger visitors \u2014 worth checking the current prices before you head over, since they do change.<\/p>\n<p>The museum has also taken part in Bank of America\u2019s \u201cMuseums on Us\u201d program, where showing your card gets you in free on select days.<\/p>\n<p>The largest permanent exhibit, \u201cRevolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing,\u201d <mark class=\"hl-yellow\">lines up more than 1,100 pieces of real hardware in chronological order<\/mark>.<\/p>\n<p>It runs from the ancient abacus to the first-generation iPhone, so simply walking the timeline gives you the whole arc of computing history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChatbots Decoded\u201d is another popular stop, with conversational robots you can talk to and interactive displays tracing the history of AI research.<\/p>\n<p>The CHM Store on the first floor carries museum-only merchandise that makes for good souvenirs.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a caf\u00e9 on site too, for a drink and something light.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: bold; margin: 1.2em 0 0.6em 0; color: #555;\">7-2.
